James T. “Jimmy” Young, 75, of Huntsville, passed away on Wednesday peacefully at home surrounded by his family.
Jimmy worked as a NASA Contractor for 46 years including 23 years with Teledyne Brown Engineering where he retired. He also served in the United States Navy on board the USS Fletcher, participating in the Mercury Program, helping to recover Wally Schirra and Gordon Cooper who were two of the original seven American astronauts. He also served in the United States Air Force in the Vietnam War.
He was a member of North Hills Presbyterian Church.
Jimmy was preceded in death by his parents, Robert & Estelle Young; His two brothers, Rickey Young and Tony Young; His grandson, Landen Dixon and his brother-in-law, Howard Bentley.
Surviving family members include his wife of almost 42 years, Frances Bentley Young; His son, James A. Young and his wife, Lena; His daughter, Beverly Whitaker; His grandsons: Austin Wilson, James A. Young Jr, and Kye Hylton. His sisters, Mary (Ronnie) Herrin and Barbara Young; His sisters-in-law, Dorothy Moore, affectionately known as “the old heifer next door” and Faye Bentley; His brothers-in-law and their wives: Gary & Jan Bentley, Don & Jan Bentley, Dean & Kay Bentley, Terry & Louise Bentley. He is also survived by his loyal companion, his dog Poochie, and by many friends and relatives – both Bentleys and Youngs.
