James (Jimmy) Raiford Storey James Raiford Storey of Newnan, Ga. passed away on March 2, 2021, at Piedmont Newnan Hospital from complications from back surgery. He is the son of William Raiford Storey and Mary Frances Banks Storey, born December 19, 1946.
He is survived by his wife of 43 years, Charlene Grizzard Storey. Jimmy was a 1964 graduate of Newnan High School. He was a graduate of Middle Georgia College with an Associate Degree in Science in 1966, The Georgia Institute of Technology earning a Bachelor Degree in 1970 and a Master of Science Degree in 1976, both in Ceramic Engineering. He was employed by D.M. Steward, Kaiser Aluminum and Chemical Refractory Division, American Float Glass and Bibb Co. where he worked as an Engineer for many years. In 1982 Jimmy and Charlene moved back home to Newnan where Jimmy pursued a career in teaching. Jimmy began teaching mathematics and chemistry at East Coweta High School in 1984 and remained there until his retirement in 2011. He earned his Specialist in Education Degree from West Georgia College in 1991. Jimmy taught all levels of mathematics including AP Statistics and teaching as part-time instructor for The University of West Georgia. He also received the honor of being chosen as Star Teacher at East Coweta High School. He had a love for his students. He made the classroom fun and kept them laughing. His sarcastic personality and “joking around” made most students enjoy him as a teacher. Jimmy enjoyed life, always finding the positive in things. He was always a pleasure to be around, a kidder and kept everyone laughing. He enjoyed using his tractors and gardening. He had a “green thumb”. Jimmy was most passionate about foreign missions. He made more than twenty trips to Honduras, traveled to Romania, assisted with installing Solar Power with Sonlight Power, and supported Pure Water of the World and Living Hope for Honduras. His latest adventure was with Mission Mbale. With failing health he was unable to travel but assisted from home with these ministries. Jimmy was an active member of First Baptist Church in Newnan until declining health. He was a member of the CPR Sunday School Class.
Jimmy is survived by, in addition to his wife, his mother-in-law Betty Whittle Grizzard of Newnan, Ga., brother-in law Timothy Charles Grizzard of Franklin. His nieces and nephews he loved like grandchildren are: Julia Carstensen (Paul) of Loveland Co, Charles Grizzard of Charlottesville, Va, Cora Wilson (Ryan), Chamblee, Ga, John Grizzard (Kristen), Carrollton, Ga., Victoria Grizzard, Pensacola, Fl., Catherine Grizzard, Richard Grizzard, Samuel Grizzard, Franklin, Ga., great niece Amelia Grizzard and great nephew Jude Wilson. He is also survived by uncle and aunt Leroy and Louise Storey of Loganville, Ga. and aunts Syble Storey of Newnan, Ga. and Barbara Banks of Hampton, Ga.
He loved his cousins like brothers and sisters. He leaves behind many on the Storey side as well as the Banks side. Pallbearers are John Grizzard, Samuel Grizzard, Ryan Wilson, Randy Storey, Mike Pettigrew. Honorary Pallbearers are Paul Carstensen, Tommy Storey, Charles Grizzard, and Gary Storey.
