Jim was born on November 6, 1949 in Nashville, Tennessee to Judge James Mayes Swiggart, Sr. and Dorothy Ann Seward Swiggart. He was preceded in death by his mother and father. He is survived by his wife of nearly 29 years, Stacy Sue Swiggart, and his children, daughter Kylee Ann Swiggart and son James (Jamey) Loran Swiggart.
Jim graduated from Battle Ground Academy in Nashville in 1967, and completed his undergraduate studies at Western Kentucky University in Bowling Green, Kentucky and Vanderbilt University in Nashville, Tennessee. While Jim began playing tennis at the age of 9 years old, he did not start his teaching career until his later years at Vanderbilt in 1969.
