James J. Hooper, Jr., 76, of Carlisle and formerly of Virginia, died Saturday, Oct. 9, 2010 in Cumberland Crossings Retirement Community.
Born May 11, 1934 in Washington, D.C., he was a son of the late James J. Hooper, Sr. and Alice Mangum Hooper.
Mr. Hooper held a Master?s Degree in Psychology an had been employed as a mental health counselor with Family Guidance Clinic for 15 years. He had also been employed at Bookspan, formerly Book of the Month Club, Mechanicsburg, until his retirement in 2000. During retirement, James was employed as a store associate with Giant Food Stores, Carlisle.
He held memberships with the Carlisle Brethren in Christ Church and Grace United Methodist Church, both in Carlisle.
While living at One West Penn apartment complex, he was very involved in the exercise program and the walking teams. For many years, he represented the Carlisle Brethren in Christ Church at the annual ?Messiah? choral presentation held annually in December at the Allison United Methodist Church.
James also volunteered at the Carlisle Regional Medical Center, Habitat for Humanity and Church of God Home, and he traveled twice to Mississippi with Carlisle Brethren in Christ Church member teams to assist in the aftermath of Hurricane Katrina. He was also a US Army veteran.
Surviving are a daughter: Janel Shipp of Carlisle; two sons: Jay J. Hooper of Exton, Pa and Timothy P. Hooper of Brentwood, Tn; two grandsons, one granddaughter, three step-grandchildren and his former wife: Linda C. Hooper.
