On the afternoon of August 23, 2015, James Herschel Johnson, age 89, answered that last call to service and went to be with the God who created him.
Herschel was born in Luthersville, Georgia on May 7, 1926 to the late Henry Franklin and Lizzie Gill Johnson. He was preceded in death by his wife of 54 years, Florine Bowie Johnson in 2003. Also preceding him in death were his sisters and brothers-in-law Henrietta and Murray Plant, Mary Ann and Bob Ackerman.
Herschel was a member of The Greatest Generation and served in the Navy during World War II. He was a Navy Seabee on the island of Okinawa. Herschel worked for the Newnan Fire Department from July 1941 until July 31, 1991 and retired with the rank of Captain. His off-duty time was spent on his beloved farm land in Meriwether County. He had been a member of First Baptist Church for 67 years.
Surviving him are his daughter and son-in-law Rosalind Johnson and her husband Jimmy; his granddaughter Susie Tollerson. Also surviving are his sister, Betty Smith and her husband Edward; brother, Pete Johnson and his wife Ann. There are also nieces, nephews, cousins and many friends.
