Jim was born on September 16, 1943, to George and Gladys Nowland in Boise, Idaho. He was their fourth child and quite a surprise arriving 16 years after his oldest sibling.
While in high school, Jim joined the US Army to become a helicopter maintenance specialist and certified sharp shooter with a rifle. He dreamed of flying those machines, however his height held him back. He was stationed in Fairbanks, Alaska for most of his active duty. Jim was honorably discharged from the military in 1966.
On New Years’ Eve 1966, Jim went on a blind date and met the love of his life, Diana Ayers.
Jim had a knack for fixing almost anything and even had his own mechanics shop for a time. He bought his first classic car, a 1939 Buick Sedan, around 1986, and spent many hours restoring this car to its original glory. From then on, he and the family went on many car runs through the western states. Jim also enjoyed camping, woodworking, tinkering with things, and in the later years, growing his tomatoes and cucumbers. He was always ready for a joke and up for something adventurous.
Jim was a loving father, husband, and excellent hugger. Jim passed away on July 7, 2022 of natural causes and will be greatly missed. He is survived by his daughter Stacie, sister Donna, and many nieces and nephews. Jim was preceded in death by his parents, brother Cecil, sister Peggy, and wife Diana.
