James “Jim” Haas, age 89, of Algona died on Saturday October 21, 2017 at the Good Samaritan Care Center in Algona. James Richard Haas, the son of Herbert and Emma (Ketelsen) Haas, was born on January 5, 1928 in Whittemore. Jim enlisted in the United States Army in April of 1951 serving as an Airplane Mechanic during the Korean War. He was honorably discharged in April of 1953. On March 25, 1967, Jim was united in marriage to Maxine Johnson at Trinity Lutheran Church in Algona. He was a farmer and retired in 2005. Jim was a member of the Trinity Lutheran Church where he served as a church elder and usher. Jim was also a member of the VFW and American Legion. He loved spending time with his family, especially his grandchildren. For thirteen years, Jim and his family went on fishing vacations to Fish Trap Lake in Motley, MN. He was a jack of all trades and could fix anything. He loved to help his neighbors and spend time outdoors. Jim was an avid reader; reading magazines, newspapers and books cover to cover. Jim is survived by his wife of 50 years, Maxine of Algona; daughters, Colleen (Jay) Johnson of Faribault, MN and Paula (Troy) Nichols of Syracuse, NE; five grandchildren, Allison, Colton, and Jaydon Nichols and Emma and Sam Johnson and a brother, Harlan (Helen) Haas of Algona. He was preceded in death by his parents; brothers, Roland and Gerald Haas and twin sisters in infancy.
