James Houston Lewis, age 82, of Tipton, passed away peacefully on Saturday, December 24, 2022, with his loving wife by his side. Jim endured a 16 year battle with Multiple Myeloma, which he pridefully fought through every day. Jim was born in Anderson, IN on June 29, 1940 to his parents, Herman H. Lewis and Bonnie J. (Billings) Lewis. He married the love of his life, Sandra (McCullough) Lewis on February 11, 1967, and the two treasured their 55 years together.
Jim graduated from Jefferson Township High School in Kempton in the Class of 1958. He always worked as an auto technician. Jim will be well remembered for owning and operating Lewis Standard, from 1967 through 1977, which sat at the corner of State Road 28 & 31 in Tipton. Jim and his wife ended up selling Lewis Standard and deciding to build a shop on the family farm so Jim could better serve all of the local farmers with their equipment and vehicle repairs. Jim was extremely gifted in his skillset. He took great pride in his work and demanded excellence from himself as well as anyone working for him. Jim very much enjoyed teaching others, and always saw it as an honor to pass on any knowledge he had to help others. Of course his mindset, and meticulous work ethic earned much respect and made Jim a natural mentor for many.
In Jim’s spare time, keeping his yard mowed and looking green was a priority. However, his real love was restoring his old 2 cylinder John Deere tractors. Over the years he fully restored 6 of them. Jim enjoyed taking them to shows and pulling them in the antique tractor pulls. Jim was usually a man of few words, unless he was talking tractors, then he had a lot to say. He genuinely impacted many lives and will be greatly missed!
Those left to carry on Jim’s legacy of love are his wife, Sandra Lewis; cousin, Tom (June) Osborne of Elkin, NC; In-laws, Susie Kirby, David McCullough, Terry McCullough; nieces and nephews, LeaAnn Hinkle, Jennifer Rushing, Jamie Bever and Josh McCullough.
