James (Floyd) Demps, age 84, of Valparaiso, Indiana passed away Monday, May 2, 2016, at Valparaiso Rehabilitation Care Center in Valparaiso.

James was a 40-year resident of Gary, Indiana, also having lived in Mountain Home, Arkansas and Crossville, Tennessee. He was born January 9, 1932 in Sparta, Tennessee to Vasco and Mattie (Robinson) Demps. He attended the Oliver Springs, Tennessee school district and went on to join the U.S. Marines. He moved to Indiana and was a longtime truck driver with Ruan Transport.

A member of the Church of God, James enjoyed time spent hunting, fishing and camping along with traveling. On August 8, 1953, in Rensselaer, Indiana James married Reatha DeWees who preceded him in death. Surviving are his loving children, Gregory (wife Lori) Demps of Hobart, Indiana, Cheryl (husband Carl) Matthews of Valparaiso, Indiana and Lori (John) Alexander of Orlando, Florida.

Other survivors include 8 grandchildren, 14 great-grandchildren, two sisters, Myrtle Downs of Rensselaer, and Reba (husband Lee) Crass of Crown Point, Ind., and a brother, Richard (wife Margaret) Demps of Knoxville, Tennessee. James was preceded in death by his wife Reatha, parents, Vasco and Matttie (Robinson) Demps, two sister, Aline Smith and Martha Billingsley and two brothers, Alvin Demps and Marvin Demps.
