Passed away unexpectedly on Friday, August 17, 2018. He was 66 years old. James Fives was born on June 2, 1952 in Des Moines, Iowa to the late Joseph Collins and Pamela (Booth) Fives.
Jim is survived by his wife, Mary; children: Alexander Joseph Fives and Virginia Pamela Fives; sister, Julie (Robert) Flood; cousin, Anna (Malcom Scott) Booth. Preceded in death by: mother, Pamela Marian Sylvester Fives; father, Joseph Collins Fives; mother-in-law, Virginia Topham; father-in-law, Hanford R. Topham Jr.
Known for his many talents, Jim was a sign painter, calligrapher, and artist. Owner of Jim Fives Art and Sign for over thirty years, he was a fine artist and one of the last old school sign painters, specializing in gold leaf and window lettering, cartoons and logos. Throughout Old Town Saginaw, Jim created a total of six morals: Wienberg-Pankonin Drug, Fordney Hotel, Record Run on the Saginaw River, Wah Wah Sum, and Jacox Steering Gear. In recent years, he created imagery and limericks for Spatz’s Bakery as well as Pasong’s Cafe. For the past six years, he participated in Art Prize.
He and his wife Mary were the winners of the All Area Art Award 2017. Jim and Mary loved antiquing and discussing art.
