Jim was born in St. Louis, Missouri to Henry and Elise Curtin. He grew up in Springfield, Illinois. He received his Registered Pharmacist degree in 1965 from Drake University. He practiced pharmacy at St. John’s Hospital and Watt Brothers Pharmacy both in Springfield, Illinois. He married Barbara Glover in Springfield on September 14, 1974. They relocated to Denver in 1983. Jim continued to practice pharmacy at Fitzsimons Army Medical Center until it was decommissioned. Jim was the final civilian pharmacy supervisor at Fitzsimons and he turned out the lights in 1997. He then worked as an inpatient pharmacy supervisor at the University of Colorado Hospital until his retirement. Jim and Barb traveled extensively in their retirement.
