James Edward “Sonny” Johnston, age 78, of Huguley passed away on Tuesday, August 17th, 2021 at the East Alabama Medical Center in Opelika, Alabama.
Sonny was born on July 29th, 1943 in Fairford, Alabama to the late Hillard and Antra Chestang Johnston. He was also preceded in death by his brothers, Charlie Harvey and Hillard Johnston, Jr.; sisters, Ola Mae Rivers, Bernice McNeill; mother and father-in-law, Chester and Lessie Kirby.
He was a member of Emmanuel Baptist Church in Valley, Alabama.
Before Sonny’s health declined, he loved riding horses, going to the horse sales and auctions, and restoring old cars to sell. He was fun loving and always “the life of the party” often telling his embellished truck driving tales.
He is survived by his wife of 58 years, Joan Kirby Johnston; children, Elaine Alexander, Leslie (Mark) Brewer; grandchildren, Jordan Danford, Jacob Danford, Sarah Alexander, Jacyn, Madison, Levi Brewer; great-grandchild, River Valencia; sister-in-law, Avonelle Kirby, Sylvia Kirby; many nieces, nephews, and other extended family members and friends.
