James Edward Fent Age 81 of Owosso passed away Monday, May 22, 2017 at Sparrow Health Systems. A Celebration of Life will be held at 3pm, Sunday May 28, 2017 at Burton Community United Methodist Church with Pastor Herb Wheelock officiating. The family will receive friends at the church from 12pm to the time of service. Jim was born June 23, 1935 in Flint, Michigan, to the late Rollin and Hilda (Volz) Fent. He graduated from Montrose High School in 1953, then attended Michigan State University and graduated in 1957 with his bachelor’s degree in mechanical engineering. Jim was Director of Engineering at the former Midland Ross and Bendix Corporations, specializing in airbrake design for commercial vehicles. He married Gertrude (Trudy) Rosalind Arthur in Alpena at the First Baptist Church on August 3, 1957. They have been in love and together for over 60 years. Jim was a member and lay leader of the Burton Community United Methodist Church. He was also a member of The Gideon’s International and the Society of Automotive Engineers (SAE). Jim was a devout Christian who carried and spread his faith with him day after day. In everything he did, whether it was driving the Burton UMC bus, mentoring youth, coaching sports teams for his children, attending his grandchildren’s sports or performing arts events, he showed a zeal for life. He loved hunting with his son, annual fishing trips to Canada with his wife, MSU sports, and Farmall Tractors. Our hearts break as we are parted from a loving husband, father, grandfather and great-grandfather, however we know that he met his Lord and Savior with great enthusiasm and can now resume his Tuesday morning coffee meetings with longtime friend Bill Wheless, who also passed recently. Jim is survived by his wife Trudy Fent; children, Steve (Sandy) Fent, Sue (Mike) Wesseldyk, Cindy (Rick) Brummette; grandchildren Corinna and April Kudwa, Tiffany (Tristan) Spierling, Nathan and Gabrielle Wesseldyk; Rachelle Cawley, Shayna, Rosalyn, Rollin and Rourke Brummette; great-grandchildren Landon, Colton, Callum, Blythe and Lawton Spierling; sister-in-law Myrtle Fent; nephew Brian (Roberta) Fent; and many other loving family members and friends. He was also predeceased by his brother Jack, nephew JD and his wife Cindy, and grandson Patrick. Memorial contributions are suggested to The Gideon’s International or the Burton Community United Methodist Church. A special thank you to Dr. Will Page-Echols for helping Jim live a long and healthy life. Online condolences may be sent to the family at Nelson-House.com.
