James C. RitterJames Cody Ritter, 86 of Carlyle, passed away Tuesday, July 4, 2017 at St. Joseph’s Hospital in Breese.Mr. Ritter was born July 5, 1930 in Seminole, Oklahoma, son of Bayless Arkley Ritter and Elsie Kathryn (James) Ritter.

He married Bonnie Manhart on February 25, 1955 and she survives in Carlyle.In addition to his wife of 62 years, he is also survived by three children: James “Jim” Ritter, Jr. and wife Carol of Carlyle, Tammy Schurdell and husband Glenn of Hoffman and Dave Ritter and wife Chelsea of Edwardsville; 10 grandchildren: James Cody Ritter, III of Carlyle, Dylan Ritter of Aviston, Crystal Ellette of Ballwin, Missouri, Jeanie Davis of Centralia, Tina Howard and husband Jesse of Hoffman, Dustin Ritter and wife Megan of Trenton, Cassidy Ritter of Carlyle, Katrianna Stern-Ritter of Edwardsville, and Veneta Stern-Ritter of Edwardsville; 10 great-grandchildren: three brothers: Jerry Ritter and wife Ruth Ann of Texas, Ron Ritter of Texas, and David Ritter and wife Sharon of Oklahoma; a sister, Betty Evans of Junction City; several nieces, nephews, cousins and friends.He was preceded in death by his parents, mother-in-law and father-in-law: Charles and Ida Manhart, a grandson: Charles “Chuck” Schurdell and two brothers: Tom Ritter and Paul Ritter.

Mr. Ritter served in the U.S. Army. Mr. Ritter worked for the Sohio Oil Company for 35 years and assisted in the Alaskan Pipeline Project as a Hydro Tester. He also worked as a courier for Farmers State Bank of Hoffman for 10 plus years. He was a member of the First Baptist Church in Centralia for 38 years. Mr. Ritter enjoyed wood working, gardening and watching old western movies. He was an avid St. Louis Cardinals Fan. His greatest enjoyment was spending time with his family and friends.
