James Arthur Smith was born in Indianapolis, Indiana on January 5, 1948. He was the son of Mose J. Smith and Bertha Carson Smith. His parents preceded him in death.
James became known to family and his many friends as ”Jimmy”. He completed his primary and secondary education in the Indianapolis Public School System, and graduated from Crispus Attucks High School.
James heeded the call to serve his country in the armed forces. He enlisted in the United States Navy on March 8, 1966, and served three years. He was honorably discharged on December 1, 1969.
