Jamie died from suicide on Thursday, January 26, 2017. He was the loving husband of Anna Koning (Bierlein) and devoted father to their children, Claire (7), Henry (7) and Emma (5). Jamie was born in Kalamazoo on October 1, 1980 to Jim and Diane Koning. His brother, Josh (Michelle) arrived two years later, and sister Jill arrived in 1985. Growing up, the family lived in the Kalamazoo area, but summered in Bear Lake, Michigan.

Anna and Jamie met in 1996 through their youth group and became the best of friends. They were united in marriage on September 17, 2005. Jamie’s in-laws are Fred and Cindy Bierlein, of Kalamazoo, and siblings Heidi (Jon) Wuggazer of Florida and Ben (Jessie) Bierlein of Kalamazoo. He is survived by many who love him, including nieces and nephews, to which he was referred to as “Uncle Awesome.” Jamie was in the printing business, but his heart was drawn towards God’s work. He was a Chaplain with Missional Chaplains, of which he co-founded.

He was a Deacon at Centerpoint Church in Kalamazoo and the leader for his son’s Trail life group. Jamie loved to spend time with his family. He was a devoted father, who loved reading with the kids and playing games. He became an expert at constructing and bringing to life any creation, idea or item his children imagined. As a family, they enjoyed camping, all sorts of adventures and simply enjoying time together. The family wishes to express their gratitude to Centerpoint Church, Zion Lutheran Church and a multitude of family, friends and business acquaintances. Special thanks to Randy Dylhoff of the Portage Police Department and Trooper John Schneider of the Michigan State Police.
