James Andrew Currie, 83, husband of Virginia (Ross) Currie of Niantic and formerly of Old Saybrook for thirty-seven years, passed away at the VA Health Care Facility in Rocky Hill on June7th. Jim was born in Staten Island, New York on June 2, 1929, son of the late Andrew F. Currie and Sarah J (Newburn) Currie.
Jim grew up in Waldoboro, Maine, attended local schools and went to the University of Maine before receiving his appointment to the United States Military Academy at West Point. After graduation, Jim married Virginia Ross on July18, 1953. They had three children: Jeffery Alan Currie married to Ruth Helen (Zelske) and their children Caitlin(Saladrigas) Currie and Jackson Currie; Robert James Currie married to Lynn Ann (Smith) and their children Spencer Currie and Alyssa Currie; and Jane Anne Currie married to Stephen Sanford and their children Trenton, Cody and Corey Sanford. Jim’s military career started at Fort Sill, OK at the Artillery School, then to Fort Devens, MA with a Regimental Combat Team.
