James (Jim) Alven Moran

Born August 31, 1923

In Giebe, Washington

5 miles from Cheney.

He was called home peacefully

by his Heavenly Father on

March 4, 2017 in Parker, Colorado.

The strong and independent nature of Jim began with being born at home in a Union Pacific section house by the railroad tracks just outside of Cheney, WA. He had an older sister, Veta and younger brother, Jack and his bedroom was a screened in porch with no heat.  One hundred pound blocks of ice were kept in the icehouse packed in sawdust and acted as refrigeration.  There was no electricity, running water or inside bathroom facilities. He played on graveled sport fields and his favorite swimminghole was the Columbia River.

Jim was a man with an iron grip both literally and figurative.

The strength of his handshake took many young caddish men to their knees. He also had a firm grip on what was important in life. He valued country, family, honesty, helping those in need, and hard work in order to make it on his own.

At Umatilla High School his doubles partner in tennis was that spunky girl,

Dolores Van Schoiack, and was the one who spent 65 years of marriage by his side. His nickname in school was “Flash”. At age 21, his “friends and neighbors” drafted him into the Army. World War II changed so many young lives forever and he was among them. Jim was wounded on Christmas eve in the leg, foot and hand during the Battle of the Bulge.

After retirement Jim, Dee and youngest daughter Cindy, enjoyed many cross-country trips in their motorhome. Jim moved to Colorado soon after Dee past away in 2009 to live with his second daughter, Sharon, and her husband. In 2013 declining health made it necessary for him to move into a small homelike assisted living care center.

Jim was preceded in death by his loving wife Dolores Moran and his youngest daughter Cindy Moran. He is survived by his daughters, Sue Kilander (Art), and Sharon Schrage (Scott), four grandchildren, Chad (Vicki), Teresa (Kevin), Shana (Jeff) and Nicole (Dave), thirteen great grandchildren, Ryan (Emma), Paige (Justin), Hailey, Everett, Ethan, Henry, Samuel, Sloane, Wyatt, Brysen, Ella, Swayze and Natalie.

In celebration of Jim’s life take your family out for

“Root beer floats.”
