James A. Omahen, 90, of Oglesby, passed away Tuesday, April 18, 2017, at St. Margaret’s Hospital in Spring Valley. He had been a resident of the Illinois Veterans Home in LaSalle for the past nine months.
Mr. Omahen was born September 6, 1926, in LaSalle. He was a graduate of LaSalle-Peru High School and received technical training at Illinois Valley Community College. He married Lucille Delmanowski on January 15, 1949, at St. Hyacinth’s Church in LaSalle.
Mr. Omahen was a veteran of the U.S. Navy, serving during World War II in the Pacific Theater of Operations. He was a member of the Veterans of Foreign Wars. He was a proud Operating Engineer with Local 150 where he remained active even after retirement.
Mr. Omahen was active at church, first at St. Roch’s Church and later Resurrection Church in LaSalle where he helped with bingo and with whatever was needed around the church. He was currently a member of Holy Family Church in Oglesby. He enjoyed the outdoors, especially hunting, fishing, trapping and mushroom hunting. He was a regular contributor to the radio program, Chalk Talk on WLPO in programming regarding the outdoors. He also enjoyed coin collecting and photography, especially taking pictures of the sunrise and sunset.
Survivors include his wife, Lucille; two children, Susan C. (Marshall “Dusty”) Johnson of Oglesby and James P. Omahen of Los Angeles and two grandchildren, Rachel and Daniel Johnson.
He was preceded in death by his parents, Anton and Josephine (Kalin) Omahen.
