It is with great sadness that the family of James Corey announces his passing on June 26, 2018, at the age of 92 years. Born and raised in Greenville, North Carolina, James enlisted in the Navy, later joined the Merchant Marine, and then the Coast Guard, and served in WWII in Europe and the Pacific, and the Korean War. In the 1960’s, he was stationed at the USCG Field Testing and Development in Curtis Bay, where he helped improve the design of helicopter rescue litters and oversaw construction of some of the first Coast Guard hydrofoils. Retiring as a Master Chief after a 20-year career in the Coast Guard, he then worked at CONOCO, remaining in Maryland with his wife, Sabra. At home, he continued to enjoy his large vegetable garden, cooking on a special rotating grill he made, and working on handyman projects. He will be lovingly remembered by his surviving sons, Craig (Kate) and Jerry, a daughter Sandra (Ken), two grandchildren, and one great-grandson.
