Jackie, age 75 of Jarrettsville Maryland, passed away on October 18, 2015 after a 3 year battle with cancer. Born in Middle River Maryland, she was the only daughter of the late David Leo Messenger & Alberta Mary Jackson.
She was the sister of David Leo Messenger Jr. and Charles Earl Messenger.
As a child, Jackie was a singer and then a tap dancer with the “Aristocrats” and performed on the TV shows “Candy Corner” and “The Collegians”. In 1952 she graced the cover of the Baltimore T-V Eye as a member of “The Collegians”.
She was also the maid of honor at the Orems Methodist Church Tom Thumb Wedding production.
When she was 8 years old, she was added as a junior attendant to the Bathing Beauty contest hosted by Glenn L Martin at their annual picnic at the Bay Shore Park.
Jackie was also active while attending Stemmers Run Junior HS and Kenwood HS where she was treasurer for the 9th grade class as well as the 1958 senior class at Kenwood HS. She was married in 1960 to Kenneth L. King, a local musician and was very busy in the 60’s with her brother Charlie, attending his track meets at Kenwood High School and Villanova University. In 1961 Jackie and Ken were blessed with the birth of their only child, Mark B. King.
She and Kenneth divorced in 1980 but remained friends throughout her life. Jackie and Ken were involved with Cub Scouts and Boy Scouts with Mark and then with his ensuing music career which began in the early 70’s and culminated with his most recent band “No Pets for Noah”, where Jackie was a staple at most of the bands shows over the 21 years they performed.
Many of the attendees considered her the “Band Mom” and came to expect to see her and were disappointed if she could not attend.
She always made everyone feel at home and as if she had known them forever. She was able to make connections with anyone and chat with them for hours even if it was the first time they had met. She loved parties and cooking food to serve.
She always cooked much more than was needed as she didn’t want anyone to go without.
Jackie worked for the Department of Defense for 37 ½ years, many of which as the Commander’s Secretary, retiring on October 31st, 1995 as a Contract Administrator.
Jackie adored, and is survived by, her granddaughter Laura Mae King. Jackie was intimately involved in Laura’s life, taking her to Soccer, Basketball, Girl Scout Meetings and Destination Imagination meetings and Competitions.
Jackie is also survived by her significant other and companion of 9 years, Lt Col Richard H. Eaves USAF (Ret). Jackie and Richard met back in 1964 when he was a captain stationed at the Air Force Plant Representative office at the Martin Company in Middle River.
They reconnected and have spent the last 9 years enjoying each other’s company, eating crabs at Madonna Seafood, going on vacations with family and attending events as well as No Pets shows.
