Jacqueline Janet Howard Holmes was born April 24, 1947, at Garfield Hospital in Washington, DC.
Jackie was the only daughter born to the late Saxton Yates Howard and Bessie Doris Robinson Howard. She was educated in the District of Columbia public school system.
Jackie graduated from Theodore Roosevelt High School in 1964, and attended Howard University for a year where she met her husband, Robert L. Holmes. She transferred to Strayer University and graduated with an Associates Degree in 1967. Jackie dedicated 50 years of Federal service to the Department of Veterans Affairs. She received many awards and honors during her Federal career, but she would say her greatest reward was the many friends she made during her journey.
Jackie loved people, but she loved God and her church the best. In 2006 she was encouraged by her good friend, Moretha Johnson, to teach crochet as a part of Asbury’s Brighter Day Ministries. The goal was to make lapghans for bereaved family members. Jackie’s first response to her long time friend was “but I don’t teach.” Where upon Moretha’s reply was, “that’s not an answer.” Jackie’s son often said, “She had more yarn than she knew what to do with and could open her own store.” Her, family taught her the value of sharing and giving service at an early age. With this in mind, “Crocheting for Christ” was born out of the Brighter Day Ministry.
She is predeceased by her mother, father, and husband and leaves to mourn her son, Randolph C. Holmes , his wife Cyntranelle Holmes, many relatives, and friends. Though her voice and hands are stilled, we know Jackie is in heaven doing God’s will.
