Obituary of Jack Schally
We lost our dad, Jack Schally on June 25, 2019. Those who knew him understand when I say he had a storied life.
Dad’s nose was forever in a book. Starting at 12 yrs old he spent his summers travelling west via train or thumb. He graduated high school at 16. Attended college at the U of M after the Navy. Dad worked in printing at many local newspapers and print shops- also his job in the Navy. He became an avid motorcycle connoisseur, racing, riding and selling at his shop Cyclesport (his favorites were European and Italian). He sometimes drove with our grandmother in his sidecar which was quite a sight.
Dad said the first time he saw our mom Janet he was head over heels. In his typical non-traditional way they eloped without telling anyone for over a year that they were married. She took care of the family and allowed him to pursue his hobbies and interests (she was a saint!).
Dad and his friends started the Central Roadracing Association (CRA) and the Norton Owners Club (NOC), hosting motorcycle races at Brainerd Intl. Raceway. We kids were commissioned there to run scores to the officials and put together club mailings.
Dad picked up on bicycling and toured all over Minnesota, Iowa and Europe that way. He had a zen approach that made golfing look easy. Dad practiced and preached healthy eating and exercising decades before it was popular. He brewed his own beer since his 20’s. He never lost his desire to see and learn new things, was a voracious reader and conversationalist, a skill fine tuned thanks to Toastmasters. He had a huge host of friends and acquaintances- the longest his friend Dave from childhood. After retirement Dad volunteered at the VA as an escort and at the Fort Snelling Golf Course.
Born October 10, 1930 to John and Margaret (Sheperd) Schally, the first of five siblings. Preceded in death by parents, brothers Jerry (Jerome) and Fritz (George), wife of 59 years Janet (Kastner) and son-in-law Eric Nyquist. Survived by sisters Margie and Carroll, children Todd (Nonda) Henshaw, Kristin Nyquist, Monika Schally and Jennifer Tuckner. Grandchildren Heather (Noah) Hakl, Bethany Henshaw, Cameron Nyquist, Peter (Allie) Nyquist, Madeline Nyquist, Cassandra Tuckner, Jonathan Tuckner and great niece Stacey (Ron) Koenig.
Life is not as interesting without him. Love you Dad.
