Jack K. Martin, 65, of Bloomington, Indiana passed away peacefully at I.U. Health Bloomington Hospital on March 22, 2015 surrounded by his family. He was born on July 9, 1949 in St. Catherine’s Hospital in East Chicago, Indiana to his father, Robert K. Martin and his late, beloved mother, Jolene Petrini Martin. Jack received his B.S. in Education from Ball State University in 1972 and his PhD in Sociology from the University of Utah in 1980.
Jack retired in 2014 as the Director for the Schuessler Institute for Social Research at Indiana University-Bloomington. He was currently a Senior Research Scientist, Office of the Dean, School of Public Health and Director of Research, Institute for Research on Addictive Behavior, and Adjunct Professor in the Department of Sociology at Indiana University. Before coming to Indiana University, Jack had held a number of university positions, including the Directorship of the Survey Research Center at the University of Georgia and a Research Professorship at Kent State University in Ohio. Jack was an expert survey methodologist and well-respected scholar.
His research spanned areas of race, the organization of work, and most recently the stigma of mental illness. Jack was an avid golfer, a dog lover, and fly fisherman, having just returned from a fishing excursion in northern Arkansas with an additional trip planned to Montana for July of 2015. He also had a keen interest in history, particularly surrounding World War ll. Jack is survived by his wife, Indiana University faculty member Bernice Pescosolido, whom he married in Puerto Rico on December 16, 2000.
He is also survived by his step-son, Joseph S. Furniss; his father, Robert K. Martin; his sister, Jill L. Roser; his brother, Jim Martin; their spouses and several nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his mother in 2013.
