Jack J. Wheat, 77 of Salem, IL, passed away June 9, 2016, peacefully at home with his loving family by his side. Jack was a longtime resident of Salem. Born September 3, 1938, he was the son of Lionel Wheat and Fonda (Burns) Wheat Patterson and the grandson of Herman and Lillian Wheat.
Jack married Dimples Irene Dixon on August 1, 1969, in Mt. Vernon, IL.
Jack is survived by his devoted wife of 46 years, and their two sons Steven Wheat and Michael Wheat both of Centralia, IL., mother-in-law Anna Garren, sister-in-law Linda Stuber and husband Jerry, and a half-sister Patricia Patterson of Centralia.
Jack was a graduate of Salem High School, a veteran of the United States Navy, and was a UPS Delivery Driver for 33 years. In the ’60s and ’70s, Jack enjoyed racing motorcycles and loved driving his stock cars. Later he found great pride in sharing the love of racing with his sons. He and Dimples Irene enjoyed farming their land together for over 40 years. Jack also loved riding his 883 Sportster and being with his German Shepherds throughout the years. He had a bigger-than-life personality and a gift for telling colorful stories and tall tales. Jack loved his family and enjoyed spending time with friends.
