Jack D. Hamburg, Sr., 88, of Centralia, passed away at 4:08 AM on Wednesday, April 26, 2017 at Odin Healthcare Center.
He was born January 17, 1929 in Centralia, son of Volney Swaim and Ethel (Davis) Swaim. As an infant, he was adopted by his aunt and uncle Goldie (Davis) Hamburg and Arthur Wesley Hamburg. He married Augustine “Susie” Thernes on May 5, 1989 in Paducah, Kentucky and she survives in Centralia.
In addition to his wife of 27 years, he is also survived by three sons: Charles Hamburg and wife Karen of Odin, Donald Hamburg and wife Robin of Cocoa, Florida, and Jack D. Hamburg, Jr. and wife Louise of Shattuc; a step-son, Tom Jackson and wife Cathi of Mt. Vernon; a step-daughter, Sandy Storm of Mt. Vernon; five grandchildren and six step grandchildren; several great-grandchildren; two sisters: Bonnie Baumer of Indianapolis, Indiana and Peggy West and husband Dwight of Odin; two sisters-in-law: Jean Hamburg of Odin and Judy Swaim of Rochester, Minnesota; several nieces and nephews; a special nephew, Terry Baumer and wife Patricia of Indianapolis, Indiana.
He was preceded in death by his parents, two brothers: William Hamburg and James Swaim, a brother-in-law: Duane Baumer.
Jack was retired from the Illinois Central Railroad after 25 plus years as an Inspector. He served in the U.S. Army. He had an amazing wit and a sense of humor until his last hours leaving his family and friends with many precious memories. Jack was a lifetime member of the Centralia Elks 493, member of the Centralia Moose Lodge 1219, and a member of the American Legion Post 446. Earlier in his life he was an avid bowler, who belonged to various leagues in Centralia. Jack enjoyed hunting, fishing, gardening, dancing and most of all he enjoyed woodcarving. He was of the Christian Faith.
