Jac Allerton Cushman, 89, died on Friday, July 17, 2009 at Bayshore Community Hospital, Holmdel.
Mr. Cushman was widely known for his charitable endeavors, was a former president and Board member of Manna House, a transitional home for homeless single-parent families in Cliffwood Beach.
Mr. Cushman was active in the choir at St. Benedict’s Roman Catholic Church in Holmdel. He joined St. Benedict’s in 2002 after serving as member and Elder at First Presbyterian Church in Matawan for nearly 50 years. Graduate of Trinity College in Connecticut, he rose to senior vice president of Graham Associates, executive recruitment firm in Morristown. He was a member of the Matawan Rotary club for five years.
For 20 years Mr. Cushman served Bayshore Community Hospital, Holmdel in Pastoral Care. For eight years, he was volunteer chaplain of the hospital’s Nursing Home and its assisted living center, The Willows. Earlier he had served as vice president of New York Chamber of Commerce and Industry. Prior to that, he was Assistant Managing Director of American Gas Association in New York.
Mr. Cushman married Virginia Muscarella, registered nurse, in 1988. Virginia served as head nurse to Jac’s first wife, Joan Cushman, prior to her death at Bayshore Hospital in 1986. Jac and Virginia led an active and blessed life together.
Mr. Cushman was a golf duffer, avid tennis player and rose grower. Early in his career he was assistant financial editor of this country’s oldest newspaper, The Hartford Courant. He edited both Trinity High School and Trinity College newspapers and loved to write succinctly.
He was on a headquarters ship off Omaha Beach on D-Day, was recalled to duty during the Korean War, and was honorably discharged with the rank of captain.
Surviving are his wife, Virginia Rose Cushman; two sons, Geoffrey H., Flushing, NY and Paul W., Montclair; two grandchildren, Daniel and Anne; six step children, Stephen, Chris, Leslie, Brian, Richard and Mary; and 11 step grandchildren.
