J. William (Bill) Caretti, M.D., of Greensburg died December 11, 2017 at home.  He was born June 2, 1934 in Kittanning, PA to the late Raynold J. and Eva Elisabeth Klein Caretti.  He was a member of Blessed Sacrament Cathedral.  Married in Pittsburgh, PA on June 23, 1962 to Dorothy Ann Dietrich, who survives him.  Bill was a graduate of the Pennsylvania State University with a BS in Chemical Engineering and Temple University School of Medicine, Philadelphia, PA.  With a specialty on Obstetrics and Gynecology, Bill worked for many years at Westmoreland Excela Hospital and Jeannette District Memorial Hospital. He served a term as president of the medical staff and chief of OB-GYN department at Westmoreland Hospital; also served as chief of OB-GYN department at Mercy Jeannette Hospital and was board certified in Obstetrics and Gynecology.  Bill served as a medical officer with the rank of Major in the U.S. Air Force during the Vietnam War, including tours in Germany, Alabama and Delaware.  He was the first to utilize minimally invasive laparoscopic surgical techniques at Westmoreland Excela Hospital and in Westmoreland County.  Memberships included the American Medical Association, Pennsylvania Medical Society, Westmoreland County Medical Society, Pittsburgh Obstetrical Society, American College of Surgeons, and American College of Obstetricians and Gynecologists.  Interests included downhill skiing, which he learned at the age of 50, touring military museums, and visiting national landmarks.  After retirement in 1996, volunteered for Greensburg Meals on Wheels, enjoyed weekly breakfast meetings with the Retired Old Doctors Eating Out (RODEO) club, flew in the cockpits of a WWII B-17 bomber and a 1929 bi-plane, and walked the 354 steps to the crown of the Statue of Liberty; but his primary interest was his family.  In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by brother, Raymond Caretti in 1941 and sister, Mary Virginia Sensor in 2005.  In addition to his wife, survived by his children and 13 grandchildren:  Kathleen Holser (James) of Queensbury, NY and children, Benjamin and Rachael; David Caretti (Christina Del Bene) of Bel Air, MD and children, Olivia, Samuel and Adam; Stephen Caretti (Jennifer Kerr) of Greensburg, and son, Cameron; Barbara Bizzoso (Gregory) of Lincroft, NJ and children, Tess and Kate; Monica Joyce (Daniel) of Upper St. Clair and children, Patrick, Maura and Aiden; Leonard Caretti (Joanna Evans) of Ashburn, VA and children, Emmi and Lila.
