Concepcion Lazaro Zisumbo, 80, died peacefully at McKay Dee Hospital on December 18, 2012 from complications of open heart surgery surrounded by his daughters and grandchildren. Although his heart was repaired, he could not overcome the grief from the loss of his beloved wife of 63 years, who preceded him in death on February 7, 2012. Truly, he died of a broken heart.
Concepcion was born on December 7, 1932 to Aureliano and Juliana Zisumbo Lazaro in Jeruco, MichoacAn, Mexico. At the age of 8, he met Carmen, the love of his life. He married Carmen on November 23, 1949 in the church of Cuitzeo, MichoacA¡n, Mexico.
At the age of 13, Concepcion came to the United States. He took odd jobs to survive even though he did not know the language. He took jobs wherever he could find them, hopping trains to get from place to place. He legally immigrated to the United States on January 5, 1956 with his wife, two daughters and one on the way. He made his home in Ogden, Utah, adding six more daughters to his family. He instilled a strong work ethic to all of his family members, encouraging them to go to college to build upon the dream that he had for their future. His dream was realized when all his daughters went to Weber State University and became successful career women.
On January 20, 1956, Concepcion was hired at the Southern Pacific Railroad as a Laborer. Although he was illiterate, Concepcion memorized the rules and regulations in order to pass written tests. He was appointed acting Foreman during various times of his career.
