J. Carroll Curlander 1922-2014
J. Carroll Curlander, 91, of Littleton, passed away on February 7, 2014. He was born on August 23, 1922 in Baltimore, Maryland to Katherine (Hoover) Curlander and Henry Curlander. He attended Our Lady of Lourdes Grade School and Loyola High School in Baltimore, and graduated from the University of Maryland in 1944 with a BS degree in Mechanical and Aeronautical Engineering.
Carroll was commissioned as an Ensign in the U.S. Navy in May 1944. He completed a year of postgraduate work in naval architecture at the University of Michigan, Ann Arbor, and then served as a fleet maintenance officer for the 7th fleet at the naval base in Manilla, Phillipine Islands until June 1946.
He married Shirley Jean Reiter, of Baltimore, on June 30, 1945. They were married for 68 years and had nine children.
He started work in June 1946 for The Martin Company (now Lockheed Martin) in Baltimore, testing aircraft and missile hydraulic systems. He worked in various positions as a systems engineer on the P6M Seamaster program and the B-57. In September 1959, he began work on the Titan missile program.
In March 1968 he moved his family from Baltimore to Littleton, Colorado where he maintained the family home in Columbine Country Club for over 40 years.
Carroll served on the Board of Trustees for the town of Columbine Valley from 1980 to 1982. After retiring from Martin in 1989, he served as a lector and Eucharistic Minister at St. Mary’s Parish in Littleton.
Carroll missed the beaches and ocean of his Maryland home but loved Colorado and all that it offered. More than anything Carroll loved his family. His nine children were his pride and joy and he would often talk of their achievements and education to friends and co-workers. He was known to point out that all of his children had bachelor’s degrees and had been awarded eight master’s degrees and two PhD’s among them. He had a great sense of humor and was know for his clever, witty quips and anecdotes.
He is preceded in death by his brother, Henry Curlander of Lutherville, MD.
He is survived by his wife, Shirley, nine children and their spouses, 14 grandchildren, five great-grandchildren, two sisters-in-law Betti Ann Curlander and Miriam Frey, niece Mary Grace Fordyce, and great niece & nephew Elizabeth & Daniel Fordyce.
