Irwin Cohen, 87, affectionately known as “Pop” peacefully passed from this life to join, Lillian, his wife of sixty seven (67) years and youngest daughter, Marta Collins, June 2, 2013. He was born in New York City, NY, July 17,1925 to Selma and Bernard Cohen. Irwin was preceded in death by his two brothers, William and Sherman and two sisters Gertrude and Lorraine.
Irwin joined the United States Navy at the early age of 17. He was a WWII veteran serving in both the North Atlantic and South Pacific Theaters. As an aviation electrician aboard the aircraft carrier USS Intrepid he began a career in aerospace which spanned work with vintage WWII fighters, Vietnam era F4 fighters and early manned and unmanned spacecraft. He was involved with both the Mercury and Gemini programs at Kennedy Space Center.
Irwin is survived by his daughter LaWana Castlen, sons Larry Cohen (Scottye), Bob Castlen (Deana), son-in-law Bill Collins and a special niece, Janet (Ken). He has ten grandchildren Robbie, Brian, Jeff, Terri, Brent, Krissy, Matthew, LeAnn, Stacey and Eddie as well as twenty-three great grandchildren and one great-great grandchild. He will be missed by friends and family, but never forgotten.
