Irene Brawley Shook Wagner died at her home on Sunday, Sept. 18, 2016. She was the daughter of Floyd Alexander and Mamie Mills Brawley. She was born in Salisbury, NC on July 18, 1922, and was a 1939 graduate of Taylorsville High School. In 1940, she married J.D. Carson Shook who was serving in the Navy at the time. He died on December 8, 1945 as a result of a shipboard accident.

In 1965 she married Homer Wagner of Troutman, NC. He died in 2002. Irene is survived by one son, David Harold Shook, his wife Bruce Anne, two grandchildren, Alex Shook (Brooke) and Amy Swanson (Art), and three great-grandchildren, Natalie and Sydney Swanson, and Ellen Shook. Also surviving are sisters Helen White and Wilma Bryant, as well as sisters-in-law Carolyn Eisele Brawley and Alma Wagner Murdock. She was pre-deceased by her parents, her sister Lucy Brown and her brother, Floyd Mills “Buddy” Brawley.

During her working career, Irene was employed with Statesville dentist, Dr. W.C. Current, and later at Merchants and Farmers Bank, Statesville Brick Company, and Wagner Hardware. She was an active member of the Statesville Business and Professional Women’s Club from 1959 until the present. She was also a volunteer with Troutman Lunch Box Ministry and the Troutman Help Ministries Food Bank. She was an active member of Holy Trinity Lutheran Church of Troutman. She had a wonderful productive life and she will be missed.
