Irene “Rene” Strubbe, 90, of Jacksonville, died Sunday, August 8, 2021, at Heritage Health in Jacksonville.
She was born Feb. 10, 1931, in Sinclair, IL, the daughter of Henry and Gladys Stewart Farmer. She married Lloyd H. Byers on Dec. 25, 1949, and they later divorced. She later married Darrell A. Strubbe on Jan. 31, 1975, and he preceded her in death on June 3, 2010.
She is survived by two daughters, Susan Gaudio (fiancé, Brad Zeller) of Jacksonville and Vickie Bolinger of Princeton; three sons, Bob Byers, John Byers and Larry Byers, all of Jacksonville; six grandchildren, Mike Byers (wife, Kimmie), Mandy Leib (husband, Billy), all of Jacksonville, Tonya Crow (husband, Eric) of New Berlin, Jennifer Love (husband, Jake) of Princeton, George Bolinger of Shelbyville and Andrew Lockman of St. Louis, MO; six great grandchildren, Brayden Byers and Will Leib, both of Jacksonville, Bryson and Emmalyn Love of Princeton, Megan Elmore (currently serving in the USAF stationed in Biloxi, MS) and Miley Crow of New Berlin; and several nieces and nephews.
She was preceded in death by her parents; husband, Darrell; son, Ronald Byers; granddaughter Kayleigh Byers; daughter-in-law, Debbie Byers; son-in-law, Tony Gaudio; two sisters, Frances Lange and Mildred Dugger; and two brothers, John Farmer (surviving wife, Ruby of Springfield) and Raymond Farmer.
Rene was a 1949 graduate of Ashland High School. An accomplished seamstress, she had worked at J. Capps and Sons early in her married life and for Newell’s and Emporium, altering clothing. She later did alterations in her home for many years. She spent countless hours hand-sewing quilts for each of her children and grandchildren.
Rene was a long-time member of Centenary United Methodist Church in Jacksonville, where she served as parish visitor and was a member of the Ruth Circle.
Rene was a stout St. Louis Cardinals baseball fan and was an avid follower of Duke and Illinois basketball. She also enjoyed bowling and was a former City Champion. She was an amazing cook and enjoyed hosting family dinners.
