Imogene “Jean” Whittington, 89, passed away on March 31, 2014 in Edgewater, MD. She was born in Young Harris, Georgia to David and Ethel Nichols. She graduated from Towns County High School where she was a star basketball player and attended Young Harris College. She had been employed by the Tennessee Valley Authority before moving to Washington, D.C. to work during the World War II war effort. She worked for several years at the Quartermasters General’s Office in Washington.

In 1948, she married James M. “Junior” Whittington and moved to Deale, where she resided until her death. She was the School Secretary at Deale Elementary, from which she retired in 1988 after 31 years of service. She was a long-time member of Cedar Grove United Methodist Church. Mrs. Whittington travelled extensively throughout the eastern and southern United States. She enjoyed playing the piano,  listening to country and rock music, and watching sports. She loved animals and nature, having grown up on a farm and having had many pets over the years. She owned West Highland White Terriers and Cairn Terriers for over 40 years.

In addition to her parents, Mrs. Whittington was predeceased by her husband of 54 years, Junior, and her five brothers and two sisters. She is survived by her devoted daughter, Donna Ryan and her husband Bill of Deale; two special nieces and their husbands, Peggy and John Barnard of Gurley, Alabama and Vicki and Larry Moses of Franklin, NC and numerous grand nieces and nephews. She is also survived by her dedicated friends, Ida Mae Williams and Norman and Sally Marshall, all of Deale.
