Ida Paul, 92, died at her home in Pembroke Pines, FL, on Wednesday, December 23, 2009. Ida was born on April 8, 1917, and grew up on a farm on Turkey Hill Road in Haddam. After graduating from New Britain State Teachers’ College (now Central Connecticut State College) in 1938, she taught several grades at a one-room schoolhouse in Haddam and later taught first grade at the Haddam Elementary School in Higganum for many years. She often said that she decided to retire when she realized that entering first graders were the grandchildren of children she had once taught. She was a long-time trustee of the Brainerd Memorial Library in Haddam, where she oversaw the purchases of books for the children’s department. Ida and her husband, Hyman, lived on Saybrook Rd. in Higganum for 40 years. Ida was predeceased by her husband, Hyman N. Paul. She is survived by Rev. Ralph S. Cohen, of Pembroke Pines, FL; her daughters, Judy Paul Moniz (Webb Moniz), of Armonk, NY, Jeanne Paul (Tom Nicely), of Ann Arbor, MI, and Deborah Paul Fuller (Marc Fuller), of Middleton, MA; granddaughters, Amanda Bowie Moniz (David Lenter), of New Haven, Suzanne Webb Moniz, of Providence, and Lisa Heather Fuller, of Colombo, Sri Lanka; great-granddaughter Charlotte Elizabeth Moniz, and many friends and relatives. Ida was a reader and a traveler. With her husband, Hyman, she took early retirement so that they could go camping in the U.S., Canada, and Europe, and their memories of those trips yielded many stories and slides. With Ralph, she traveled to other parts of the world, including several trips to Israel and elsewhere in the Middle East.
