Devoted mother, wife, and friend Ida “Laurene” Halverson Skogsberg passed away on December 27, 2021.
Ida Laurene Halverson Skogsberg was born May 28, 1934 to Arthur S. Halverson and Blanche Perks Halverson in Fullerton, Nebraska. She was their 6th child, and Blanche passed away due to complications from giving birth. Blanche’s sister Ida Perks Clark and her husband Robert L. Clark raised Ida Laurene with her cousins Betty, Lola Belle, and Robert (Bob).
When Laurene was five years old, the Clark and Halverson families moved from Nebraska to Nampa, Idaho. She attended Lone Tree Elementary School through 8th grade and graduated from Nampa High School in 1952. In school, she enjoyed being a member of the Spiz High School spirit group and the FHA club. She also formed several close friendships that continued throughout her life, celebrating birthdays and reunion lunches with her friends well into their 80’s.
After graduation, Laurene attended the College of Idaho, studying music and home economics for a year before meeting and marrying Dwayne E. Skogsberg in June 1953. She used her home economics skills to sew her own wedding dress.
The couple started their lives together north of Nampa on the Skogsberg family farm and dairy. In 1958, they started their own family with twins Kylene & Kaylene (deceased). A few years later, another set of twins, Kristine & Korinne, came along. The family also lived in California and Washington for short periods while Dwayne fulfilled his obligations to serve in the National Guard.
In 1964, the family moved south of Nampa to the Dry Lake area to expand their farming operation. They also expanded their family with the addition of daughters Karaly and KatieAnn.
Laurene was very busy raising five daughters on a new farm far from town. Still, she ensured her girls attended dance classes, music lessons, and various 4-H activities. She used her talents to make dance outfits, costumes for school plays, horse show clothes, and bridesmaid dresses for several of her daughters’ weddings. When the girls were older, Laurene took a part-time job sewing for the Nampa One Hour Martinizing dry cleaners on 12th avenue. She also worked as a lecturer and leader for Weight Watchers for over 30 years. Laurene enjoyed meeting, teaching, and encouraging others to lead healthy lifestyles.
Laurene’s passion for designing, creating, and organizing wasn’t limited to her sewing. She designed two houses that the family lived in, including several innovative features in the Dry Lake house. She also designed the house they spent their later years in to accommodate her changing needs caused by Parkinson’s disease. Many people will remember Laurene for hosting welcoming and enjoyable social events. From large holiday parties to small get-togethers, she enjoyed hosting family and friends in her home.
Laurene and Dwayne frequently traveled for class reunions, potato-council meetings, and trips with their daughters for national meetings and competitions. The family also went on many adventures camping and snowmobiling.
No matter what she was doing, Laurene was almost always singing or humming while she worked.
Lastly, perhaps the one thing Laurene was proudest of was her family. Raising five daughters far from town had to have been a challenge. And yet, the family learned to function as a team and became a well-oiled machine over the years. No matter the event, from trivial housekeeping chores to elaborate social functions, everyone knew their job when to jump in and lend a hand. The fact that her daughters and their families continue to be close and supportive of one another was indeed her proudest accomplishment.
Laurene was preceded in death by her parents Arthur and Blanche Halverson, and Ida and Robert Clark, her brothers Ronald, Edgar, and Robert Halverson, sisters Margaret Millican and Marie Doramus, cousins Betty Souba, Lola Belle Haltom Lester, Robert E (Bob) Clark, her husband Dwayne Skosberg, and an infant daughter Kaylene. She is survived by her five daughters Kylene Patterson (Ted), Kristine Harger, Korinne Sword (Mike), Karaly Maione (Tom), Katieann Skogsberg-Redmond (Shane), and her three grandchildren, Keela Cooper (Matt), Robert Harger, and Tyler Maione.
The family would like to thank the staff at The Bridge at Valley View for caring for her, and a special thank you to Jerry from Heart & Home Hospice for being there for both her and our family during this difficult time.
