Hyland Borg Erickson, affectionately known as “Hy” passed away suddenly at home on December 8, in Castle Rock, Colorado.
He was born in Chicago, Illinois on February 25, 1939. He was the great grandson of
Charles W. Borg who is credited with inventing the automobile clutch and the grandson of George W. Borg founder of the Borg Warner Corporation. His parents were L. Hyland Erickson and Charlotte Borg Erickson Hartman.
Hy attended The Latin school of Chicago, and graduated from
The Lawrenceville School in New Jersey in 1958. He then went to Denison University in Ohio and graduated in 1962. After a short stint in the army he went to work for the family company, Borg Erickson Corporation in 1963. The company manufactured Borg bathroom scales and Hy became president in 1966. He later sold the company in 1985 to Kraft Foods.
Hy was Chicago Chapter Founding President of SCI 1972-1974 and President of SCI 1974-1976, President SSCI 2001-2002 and President of the Weatherby Foundation 2009. His dedication to protecting sportsman’s rights and wildlife conservation in the spirit of one of his heroes Teddy Roosevelt was his life long focus . He was a founding member of The American wildlife Partners (AWCP) 2000-2003. He was a member of the Explorers Club New York, The Adventurers Club Chicago and the Young Presidents Organization (YPO). Hy was also an instrument rated airplane pilot.
He was a life long world traveler… Europe extensively, Africa over 40 times, Mongolia, Australia , New Zealand, Tajikistan, China, India, Sudan, Rwanda Ethiopia, CAR, Zimbabwe, Botswana Thailand, Argentina and Alaska countless times.
A long time Chicago area resident Hy moved to Colorado in 2013. His love of the west began while attending summer camp in Steamboat Springs in the early 1950’s. This brought him to return the mountains . He also loved Big Sky Country in Montana where he had a home for 31 years. His love of family, friends, black labs (and is beloved dog Winston) and the great outdoors were his true passion in life.
He is survived by his wife of 56 years Brenda. He has three children Kirsten Wildman (Don), Hyland Borg, Jr. (Heidi) , and Deidre Keller. He has two grandchildren, Logan Borg Spangler and Grant Keller.
