Husten Pierce “H.P.” “Poppa” Graham, of Flemingsburg, departed this life on Tuesday, July 12, 2016.
Born on August 29, 1923, in Flemingsburg, Kentucky, he was a son of Allie and Ressie Graham.
H.P. was preceded in death by his wife, EmmaBelle Jackson Graham; his parents, Allie and Ressie Graham, and two daughters, Bettye Ann (Sam) Lofton and Susan; a daughter-in-law, Charlene Graham and a grandson, Craig Lofton. Also two brothers, Charles and McMullen (Mac) Graham and one sister, Allie Morgan.
He leaves behind five daughters, Carolyn (Robert) Hayden, Julia (Arthur) Lofton, Hazel Graham, Kathye (Ernesto) Lopez all of Flemingsburg and Janet Stallard of Frankfort; four sons, William Nelson of Lexington, Larry Graham of Columbus, OH, Thomas (Terea) Graham of Johnson City, TN, and Husten (Nancy) Graham of Warner Robbins, GA; and a brother-in-law, Walter Jackson of Flemingsburg.
Poppa also leaves behind 24 grandchildren, 34 great-grandchildren and 8 great-great grandchildren. Affectionately known as “Uncle H.P.” and “Mr. H.” he leaves behind nieces, nephews and a host of cousins and friends.
H.P. retired from the Fleming-Mason RECC, he was a certified Frigidaire repairman, and ran his own landscaping business. He was voted Citizen of the Year, received the Champ Clark Award and was a Kentucky Colonel. H.P. was a strong Democratic supporter and served on the Executive Committee. He belonged to the Masonic Acacia Lodge #24 F & A.M. for nearly 60 years.
He was a World War II Veteran and received a bronze star and several other accolades. H.P. was a member of Strawberry United Methodist Church where he served as Chairman of the Board and a trustee. He was the first black Little League Coach in Fleming County. He was a huge behind the scenes advocate for Civil Rights.
