Retired Sergeant Major Humberto (Beto/Bob) Chapa died Thursday, October 13, 2016 at Brookdale Senior Living, after battling Alzheimer’s disease for several years. Mr. Chapa was born to Rafael and Amelia Chapa in Robstown, Texas on July 23rd, 1937. He spent 30 years in the US Army and was a decorated veteran. He served in multiple Special Forces (Airborne) Groups as a Green Beret, experiencing many overseas tours during his career.
Following his retirement in 1985, he graduated from Texas A&M University in Kingsville, Texas, earning a bachelor’s degree of Applied Arts and Sciences. Mr. Chapa was an active member of the Veterans of Foreign Wars and the American Legion. He enjoyed baseball, golfing, dancing and getting together with family and friends. He is best known for his charismatic personality and his ability to make everyone laugh.
Mr. Chapa is preceded in death by his parents, Rafael and Amelia Chapa of Robstown Texas; brothers, Oscar Chapa and Rafael Chapa Jr. of Robstown Texas; his brother, Jesus Chapa, of Foreman Arkansas, and his son, Humberto (Beto) Chapa II of Abilene, Texas. He is survived by his daughter, Myra, and her husband, Greg McCormick, of Albuquerque New Mexico; his son, Shawn, and his wife Jen Chapa of Oneida, New York; his son, Nathan, and his wife Heather Chapa of St. Petersburg, Florida; his brothers, Ramiro Chapa of Robstown, Texas and Hector Chapa of San Antonio, Texas as well as 12 grandchildren.
The family would like to give special thanks to the staff at Brookdale Senior Living for the love and companionate care given during his time there.
