NO. ANODVER – Hugh Neil Ross, age 95, passed away on September 21, 2020. He was born in Charlottesville Virginia on February 11, 1925, son of Hugh Ross and Barbara J Gable. Hugh grew up in Absecon, New Jersey, with summers spent memorably at his grandfather’s farm in Covesville, Virginia. Always fascinated with technology, Hugh studied physics at the University of Maryland, where he met Anne Dickinson Ross, another physics student. They married and were blessed with five children.
The family moved from Maryland to Wappingers Falls, NY around 1958, where Hugh joined International Business Machines (IBM). While most families who moved into the area at that time bought convenient little (by modern standards) suburban homes a couple miles from the IBM facility, Anne and Hugh bought a somewhat run-down farm several miles east of town, and proceeded to collect horses and neighborhood children. They undertook major renovations of the house, doing almost everything themselves. They built barns, and miles of horse fences. They organized a cooperative horse boarding club that rented the former dairy farm across the road, helping operate that through the 1960s and 1970s.
In his later years, Hugh took an interest in machining and model making, having constructed a scale replica of a Doxford Oil Engine, complete with all working parts.
Hugh is survived by his sister Florence R. Sanders of Nokesville, VA; daughters Florence Anne Ross-Raymond of Salisbury, NH, Janet Ross Moore of Poughkeepsie, NY, Nancy Susan Ross of Brewster, MA and son Gordon William Ross of No. Andover, MA. Hugh was predeceased by grandson Alec Steven Ross in 2004, wife Anne D. Ross in 2014 and son Hugh A. Ross in 2016, may their spirits comfort one another.
