Hagerstown, MD – Hugh A. Williams, 91, of Hagerstown, MD passed away on Sunday, January 8, 2023, at Meritus Medical Center in Hagerstown, MD.  Hugh had a great sense of humor and loved to make everybody smile and laugh.  He was a very gentle, kind, and caring person.

 

He was born on September 13, 1931, in Washington, D.C. to the late Hugo Otto Schulz and Jessie Williams.

 

He was a graduate of Shepherd College with a Bachelor of Science degree.  His senior year at Shepherd he was a State Champion and former Conference Record Holder in the 4×4 individual medley relay.

 

 

He was a veteran of the United States Marine Corps during the Korean War.

 

He was of the Protestant Faith.

 

Hugh was a member of Potomac Post #202 American Legion Williamsport, MD; former member of Loyal Order of Moose in Funkstown, MD.

 

He was very involved with swimming and running and at the YMCA.  He was an official starter at Williamsport High School Track meets for many years.  He coached youth sports and was a Physical Education Teacher at North Martinsburg Junior High School where he taught and coached Dave Rodgers who has been the long-term basketball coach at Martinsburg High School.  He was an avid duck pin bowler at Turner’s on Virginia Ave. for at least 30 years. Hugh completed at least 5 JFK Marathons with the last one in his mid 50’s. 

 

Hugh is survived by his son Michael W. Williams of Smithsburg, MD and his fiancé Diamond Queen of Spring Mills, WV; close friend Robert “Bo” Myers.

 

He was preceded in death by his close life companion of 20 years Pat Boyer; half-brother Donald Schulz; former wife and close friend Rosemarie Williams.
