On September 27th Robert D. Henderson of Upton died peacefully at home surrounded by his loving family after a courageous year long battle with brain cancer. He was the devoted husband of Cecelia E. (Hansen) Henderson and the cherished father of his daughter, Summer, of San Diego, CA and son, Cody, of Upton, MA. His late son, Jacy, pre-deceased him in 2000. His 62nd birthday was on August 27th.

He was born in Worcester in 1947, to Ed and Margaret Henderson and spent his childhood in Upton where he graduated from Nipmuc High School. With his love of nature in mind, he obtained a B.S. in Forestry from the University of Georgia. He then attended OCS and proudly served in Vietnam for (2) years as an Army lieutenant. Afterwards, he returned to North Carolina where in 1976 he married Cecelia and they returned to Upton in 1978.

He was Director of Marketing for Century 21 of New England for (5) years and Residential Real Estate Analyst for Coldwell Banker Residential Affiliates in the North East. He sold most of the first Century 21 franchises in New England. Robert began his residential building career in 1985, studied to be a certified Master Builder, became a member of the Builders 20 Custom Building organization and went on to construct many beautiful custom homes of which he was very proud. He loved his hometown and served the community in countless ways; he was a volunteer fireman for (30) years, a Little League coach, a member of Upton’s Long Range Planning Committee , a recent member of the Fire Company Study Committee, and a longstanding member of the finance committee of the Grafton-Upton Unitarian Universalist Church. He not only volunteered his time, expertise, and the use of equipment to the town but he also donated several pieces of land including a soccer field on West River Street and a large piece of Conservation Land on Goss Pond.
