Howard R. Hensler, 85, of 2761 Fieldcrest Drive, died Saturday, July 11, 2009 at the Valley View Nursing Center.

Howard and his wife, the former Kathryn Thomas, were married for 62 years.

Howard owned and operated a US Mail contract trucking business for 36 years until 1987.

Howard was a veteran of the US Navy and Merchant Marine were he served as a radio operator during WWII. He was a life member of the Heshbon Park United Methodist Church and a former member of the board of trustees. Howard was also a member of the Red Fox Hunting Club, the Order of Quite Birdman, a flying club for pilots, Dietrick Lamade Lodge 755, the Williamsport Consistory and a former member of the Loyalsock Twp. Planning Commission.

A flying enthusiast, Howard learned to fly in the Navy and was a licensed pilot. He gave hundreds of people their first plane ride. He also built and flew experimental aircraft.

Born August 22, 1923 in Williamsport, he was the son of Herman C. and Josephine Dailey Hensler.

Surviving in addition to his wife are sons, Stephen A. and Richard A. (Donna) both of Cogan Station; Gregory L. of South Williamsport; a brother, H. Clifford (Lois) of Linden; a sister, Joan (Robert) Gray of Williamsport; sister-in-laws, Grace Hensler Kinley of Williamsport; Margaret Hill Hensler of Hobe Sound, FL; grandchildren, Thomas and Matthew Hensler, Laura Heller, Stephanie Cohick, Heather Oden, great grandchildren, Brayden, Brigen and Brecklen Cohick and an aunt, Claire Bolton of Hershey.

Howard was predeceased by brothers, Paul and Robert Hensler.
