Howard Macdonald Sharp, 89, of Centennial, died June 9, 2011.
Howard was born to Eva Elizabeth and Herbert Medill Sharp, August 19, 1921, in Buffalo NY. He graduated from Bennett High School in 1940 and received a BA in Business from Michigan State College in 1951. He served in the US Army from 1943 to 1947 and then in the Army Reserve where he retired as a Colonel in 1981. He married Canadian Mary Elizabeth Eaman (Molly) in 1948, and they lived together in Michigan and Texas before moving to Centennial in 1960. Howard and Molly had four children.
In the 1960’s Howard and a neighbor, Al Woodson, bought Marshall Manufacturing Company, a small metal spinning and stamping factory founded in Denver in 1908. Howard managed the business side of operations until retiring in 1990. In the late 1960’s Marshall Mfg. bought a Wang 2400 computer and Howard taught himself the computer programming language and wrote programs for all accounting functions. The computer had 24 K of memory, used 8” floppy disks and cost $20,000. It was another decade before personal computers were available. All his children learned about business while working at Marshall. His sons Don and Ken took over the business when he retired. Ken runs Colorado Spinning Works today in Pueblo, Colorado.
His wife of 62 years died unexpectedly last year. He lived at home until nursing care was required. He died peacefully in his sleep. Although Howard had lived with the challenges of Alzheimer’s for the past 6 years, a previously unseen humorous side of him came out and he knew all family members and was able to perform most daily functions.
Howard is survived by four children: Donald of Walsenburg, Ken of Pueblo, Janet Pritchett of Ridgway and Denver, and Walter of Centennial. He also is survived by four grandchildren and eight great-grandchildren. Howard’s brother Edward preceded him in death.
