God brought forth a beautiful soul on September 16, 1922. Howard Lee Alford, the son of the late Matthew and Lou Ella Alford was born. God called his soul, such a wonderful creation back home on January 16, 2009.
“Sarge” as he was affectionately called, grew up in Raleigh, North Carolina. He received his primary and secondary education in Wake County, graduating from George Washington High School in 1940. Realizing the need to grow, Sarge made a career choice and joined the United States Army. He enjoyed a thirty year career in the army and was stationed several places including overseas tours to Germany, France, Japan, Vietnam, Korea and England. He retired initially after a twenty year career. After a brief hiatus he rejoined the army for a second tour of duty for ten years and officially ended his service in October 1983.
Sarge joined Wesley Chapel A.M.E. Zion Church in 2003. He served as a choir member until he was placed in a facility for long term care. The legacy of his life of service and faith is an inspiration to his family and friends.
He leaves to cherish his wonderful memories; three sons, Dennis Alford (Gladys) of Smithfield, NC, Raymond (Nina) and Antonio, both of Baltimore, MD; four daughters, Carol Haynes, Jennifer Eichelberger, Chanda Turner (Reggie) and Belinda Alford, all of Baltimore, MD; seven grandchildren, three great grandchildren, two “nephews,” Scott McDougal and Rue Marshall; and a host of other relatives and friends.
