Howard Francis Nielsen, Sr., a lifelong resident of Cromwell and loving husband of Katherine (Ewald) Nielsen for 65 years, passed away peacefully at home surrounded by his family on Friday, March 21st. Son of the late Nels Howard Nielsen and Florence Guile, Howard was born at home on July 11th 1925 in Rocky Hill. Howard served in the Army Air Corp during WWII in the Pacific Theater after graduating from Middletown High School. He worked for Aetna Insurance Company (CIGNA) for 37 years and then became General Manager of the CT FAIR Plan. Locally Howard was active in multiple volunteer capacities including the Town Insurance Commission, Cromwell Fire District, and the State Board of Fire Marshalls. Howard established the State Fire Prevention Poster Contest, the Statewide Arson Hotline and Arson Educational Assistance Program. He was active in Cromwell’s American Legion Post 105 and Knights of Columbus DeSoto #6.
