Homer Lowrie Carlson, 82, passed from this life Sunday morning, September 4, 2005, at his home with his wife at his side.

Homer was born July 27, 1923, in Long Island, New York. He was raised in Chicago by his Aunt and Uncle, Ludwig and Svea (Booth) Carlson. Homer moved to Harbert in 1945 and served his country in the U.S. Army during the Korean War. On June 28, 1947, he married Betty June Shermak at the Harbert Community Church. Theirs was the first wedding in that church.

Homer was employed by the Michigan Central Railroad in Niles, Michigan and the New York Central Railroad in Hammond, Indiana for ten years. In 1953 he moved back to the Harbert area and was employed by the Camburn Oil Company, Three Oaks, Michigan, delivering home heating oil.

After retirement, he and his wife drove cars for Mid State Auto Auction and delivered Hovercrafts throughout the country. He loved that job because it allowed him to travel and eat out, two activities he enjoyed.

Homer was a member of the Harbert Community Church where he will be remembered for filling the birdfeeders each Sunday. He also assisted his wife with the sound system at the church. Survivors include his wife, Betty; daughter, Karan Carlson of Bridgman, Michigan; sons, Keith (Margie) Carlson of Sawyer, Michigan, and Kevin Carlson of Harbert; grandchildren, Jennifer, Christopher, Samantha, Charlie, and Philip; great-grandchildren, Giuseppe, Rachael, Christopher, Jessica, Angela, Michael, Brian, Crystal and Merrilee, and many nieces and nephews.
