Hillard L. Phipps, 84, of Galesburg, died at 5:55 a.m. on Wednesday, October 22, 2008 at OSF St. Mary Medical Center, Galesburg.
Hillard was born on March 28, 1924 in Rocky Branch, KY the son of George and Essie Bell Phipps. He married Bettie Hook on August 23, 1946 in Monmouth. Surviving Hillard are, his wife, Bettie of Galesburg; 5 sons, Stan (Sherry) of Wisconsin, Steven, Ron, Larry, and Danny all of Galesburg; 3 daughters, Sharon Witt, Pamela Widener, and Rita Yocom all of Monmouth. Also surviving are a brother, Jim (Jean) of Delvalle, Texas; 2 sisters, Lula Bickell of Kirkwood and Audrey (Jerry) Anderson of Galesburg; 10 grandchildren and 7 great grandchildren. He was preceded in death by a son, Allan; 4 sisters; and a granddaughter.
A WWII Army Veteran, Hillard served in the European Campaign. He worked as a laborer at Maytag for 34 years, retiring in 1988. He was of the Baptist faith.
