Hilda Angelica (Sanchez) Lyons was born in Monte Christi, a province of the Dominican Republic, on September 9, 1914. She was the sixth child of 14 children. Due to political upheaval, she came to the United States in the summer of 1938 to live with her older sister who was already living in Chicago. She arrived at Ellis Island after a five day travel by sea on the Borinquen.

After a couple days in New York, she travelled by car with her sister and brother-in-law arriving in Chicago on August 1. Hilda had a job lined up as a seamstress making up-scaled clothing for Margaret Picks on Michigan Ave. She later took a position at a dental laboratory.
