Herman celebrated his 100th birthday on April 24, 2012. He died peacefully in his sleep on April 16, 2013. He was born and educated in Paris, Texas. His parents were Thomas Gray and Lula Jones Gray. After high school, Herman studied at Hampton Institute before joining the Army. After World War II, Herman worked briefly as a porter for the Union Pacific Railroad before meeting his wife Doris Stinson Gray in Denver. Doris predeceased Herman in 1997. Herman owned Live Wire Cleaning in north Denver for more than 50 years. Herman is survived by many beloved nieces, grandnieces, nephew and grandnephews, including Margie Major, Delores Jones, Donna Smith, Ellen Turner, Regina Tuck, and Charles Smith.
